To keep the global spotlight on climate change and build on the strong political momentum resulting from the adoption of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited representatives of all countries to sign the Paris Climate Agreement at the United Nations Headquarters on 22 April 2016.
On 12 December 2015, all 196 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at COP21 adopted the Paris Agreement, agreeing to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and also to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius. Implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and provides a roadmap for climate actions that will reduce emissions and build climate resilience.
Over 130 countries will attend the signing ceremony, including some 60 world leaders, amongst them President Francois Hollande of France. The President of COP21, France’s Segolene Royal, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Christiana Figueres and the Deputy-Executive Director of UNEP, Ibrahim Thiaw will also attend the event.
Signature by a nation kick starts a domestic process toward ratification, thus enabling the agreement to come into force. Following each national completion of this process, instruments are submitted to the Depositary under the UN Secretary-General in New York. Once such instruments are deposited a country has ratified the Paris Agreement.
