In March 2011, a massive earthquake off the north-east coast of Japan triggered a tsunami that created an unprecedented volume of debris. The debris management operation which is currently ongoing along the Tohoku coast is the largest of its kind in the world. In order to share international experiences in disaster debris management and to document the lessons from the Japanese experience, a UNEP international expert team visited the Tohoku area in early 2012.

Em março de 2011, um terremoto enorme fora da costa nordeste do Japão provocou um tsunami que criou um volume sem precedentes de detritos. A operação de gestão de detritos que está atualmente em curso ao longo da costa de Tohoku é o maior de seu tipo no mundo. A fim de compartilhar experiências internacionais em gestão de desastres e detritos e para documentar as lições da experiência japonesa, uma equipe internacional de especialistas da UNEP visitou a área de Tohoku no início de 2012.
